SDS program – English Language requirements

The Study Direct Stream (SDS) is a program designed to streamline the Canadian study permit application process for certain international students, primarily those from countries with a low risk of immigration violations. If you are eligible to apply for study permit under Student Direct Stream (SDS) program and if you are applying for study permit after August 10, 2023 you must submit the results from 1 of the valid language tests below that show all 4 language abilities were tested (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

1. Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test:
   • A minimum overall score of 60 is required
2. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP):
   • A CELPIP score that is equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) score of 7 or higher for each ability is required.
3. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic:
   • An IELTS Academic minimum overall score of 6 is required.
4. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic:
   • An IELTS general score that is equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmarks score of 7 or higher for each ability is required.
5. Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic:
   • A PTE Academic minimum overall score of 60 is required.

It’s important for international students to check the specific English language requirements of the institution and program they are applying to. Different programs may have different minimum score requirements, and some institutions may have additional language proficiency requirements, such as interviews or writing samples.

Additionally, some institutions may offer English language preparation programs for students who do not meet the required proficiency level. These programs are often referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL) or English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs.

Before applying to any educational institution, carefully review their admission requirements, including the English language proficiency requirements, to ensure that you meet the necessary criteria for acceptance.

Also note that all these English tests results are valid for 2 years and only in-person examination tests results will be accepted for SDS program.
